Quick answer

On iPhone 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max, ask your boyfriend to use 2x for half-body and full-body photos and 5x for close portraits from further away. Avoid 0.5x for photos of people.

The 5x gap

The jump from 2x to 5x is big. At 5x your boyfriend needs a lot of distance for anything more than your head and shoulders. For half-body shots, 2x is easier.

For in-between framing, ask him to use 2x and walk closer instead of pinching to 3x, which is a crop rather than a separate lens.

5x for photos that don’t look posed

Because he stands so far away, you forget about the camera. Walk, read a menu or talk to a friend while he shoots a burst at 5x.

Which lens to use for each shot

Full-body outfit

2x

Stand about 4–5 m apart if there is room; 1x from 2–3 m if not.

Close portrait

5x

Phone at eye level, lots of distance, steady elbows.

You walk toward him from far away; he keeps you in the middle and shoots a burst.

Set up your iPhone 16 Pro before you hand it over

  1. Make sure a Camera Control click opens the Camera app.
  2. Turn on Settings > Camera > Grid and Level. The grid gives your boyfriend lines to line you up with, and the level shows when the phone is straight.
  3. Wipe the lenses with a soft cloth. A fingerprint on the lens is the most common reason a phone photo looks hazy.
  4. Open InstaBF, frame the shot yourself and lock it. Your boyfriend lines his live view up with your saved frame instead of guessing.

What to tell him

“Use 2x, step back until my shoes fit, and keep the phone at my waist.”

iPhone 16 Pro questions

Do the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have the same zoom?

Yes. Both have the 5x (120 mm) telephoto along with 0.5x, 1x and 2x.

Is 5x too much zoom for portraits?

Not if there is space. It flattens perspective nicely, but it needs distance and a steady hand. Use 2x in small spaces.
