Quick answer

On iPhone 17, ask your boyfriend to use 2x for portraits, 1x for full-body outfit photos and 0.5x only for wide scenery with you near the center. Hold the phone at your waist for full-body, at your chest or eye level for portraits.

The 0.5x trap

Many bad boyfriend photos come from the ultrawide: he taps 0.5x to fit everything in, stands close, and you end up with stretched legs at the edge of the frame. On iPhone 17, 0.5x is a great scenery lens and a poor portrait lens.

If he needs more in the frame, walking back at 1x almost always looks better.

Camera Control for a steadier shot

Camera Control lets him open the camera, zoom and shoot with one button. Clicking it to take the photo is steadier than tapping the screen, especially when he holds the phone vertically at waist height.

A light press shows controls such as zoom. Show him once so he isn’t surprised when the overlay appears.

Center Stage for couple selfies

The 18MP Center Stage front camera has a wider view than the selfie cameras on earlier base iPhones, so two people and some background fit more easily at arm’s length.

Which lens to use for each shot

Full-body outfit

1x

Phone vertical at waist height, 2–3 m away, upright rather than tilted down.

Portrait

2x

He backs up until you are framed from the waist up. Phone at chest or eye level.

Café photo

1x

Sit near a window, he stands across the table and keeps the window light on your face.

Beach or mountain view

0.5x

You stand in the middle third of the frame, and he keeps the horizon straight using the level.

Set up your iPhone 17 before you hand it over

  1. Check Settings > Camera > Camera Control so a click opens the Camera app.
  2. Turn on Settings > Camera > Grid and Level. The grid gives your boyfriend lines to line you up with, and the level shows when the phone is straight.
  3. Wipe the lenses with a soft cloth. A fingerprint on the lens is the most common reason a phone photo looks hazy.
  4. Open InstaBF, frame the shot yourself and lock it. Your boyfriend lines his live view up with your saved frame instead of guessing.

What to tell him

“Use 2x, not 0.5x. Hold the phone at my chest and take a few while I look away and back.”

iPhone 17 questions

Does iPhone 17 have a telephoto lens?

It has a 2x optical-quality option that uses the 48MP main camera at 52 mm. It doesn’t have the 4x telephoto found on Pro models.

Why do my legs look stretched in his photos?

Usually he is using 0.5x, standing close or tilting the phone. Switch to 1x, step back and keep the phone upright at waist height.
